Introduction

Points of discussion:

  • What I took away from Shuky Meyer's visit
  • A response to the statements in Cory Doctorow's essay on AI's as if you were having a healthy discussion on Reddit with others who might not think like you. What resonates with you and why? What do you question and why?

Thoughts on Shuky Meyer's visit

I felt very comforted by how certain Shuky was that our career path was not going to be replaced by AI. He spoke with such optimism on the outlook for the future that I couldn't help but be excited to step into a role utilizing AI to shape the world. I have already started using some of his tips, namely the XML tags for formatting prompts.

Responce to Cory Doctorow's Essay

This piece is stunning. I have a lot of thoughts.

I wonder how can we be sure that AI won't get good enough to replace radiologists? We can't be sure so let's says it does get good enough. What then? Now the hospital can fire all the radiologists and we are left with 34,001 unemployeed radiologists. Great... That is pessimistic but it is very possible. Ever since my senior year of high school when I took an intro to psychology, I have wondered how hard would it be to recreate a human with hardware. I don't mean a bot that walks and eats and sleeps a like a human but a machine that has feelings like a human. With my one intro to psychology course as ammo I argued that it was possible; we could (at least in theory) fabricate a human's soul. Human's brains are physical things after all so what's to say we can't create a brain out of wires and solder and RJ45 connectors? Then could AI fully replace radiologists?

Now this AI bubble: I agree it's a bubble, and I agree it will pop. I also agree that there is no way for these AI companies to turn a profit in their current state. I will not pay for AI, my mom won't, my sister won't, my grandparents won't, my dad would so there's one, but my girlfriend won't, and I can name 5 good friends who won't. In this class we learned how to run an extremely powerful AI model on our PCs without wifi, and that is only 1.5 GBs big. That can fit on my iPod. I am excited to see the bubble pop. It is the best part of playing with bubbles. No one would play with bubbles if they never popped. I like the sound of watching the Super Bowl (hopefully an entertaining one) and not seeing nine different AI ads for eight things I do not need and one use that is genuinely nice but not worth becoming a reverse-centaur for.
